Performance modeling and parametric investigation of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)

Authors

Abstract:

In his paper, performance modeling and parametric study of a tubular solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) fed by hydrogen was conducted. The components of the fuel cell system and its reactions were entirely modelled and an electrochemical analysis done for it. A variety of modeling parameters including temperature, working pressure and the air mass- flow rate have been investigated in order to observe their impact on efficiency and power. The results showed that the efficiency of fuel cells and output power is increased by increasing the coefficient of fuel productivity, the actual voltage and current density fuel cell that the optimum value of coefficient productivity and current density are 0.7 and 7030 A/m2. Also the complete calculation of equations related to the solid oxide fuel cell has been done in three distinct sections of optimization, electrochemical and heating. For more accuracy, the results of modelling were compared with those of reliable sources and experimental findings, which showed a good compatibility.

Model Reduction of a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) for Control Purposes

Fuel cells belong to an avant-garde technology family for a wide variety of applications including micro-power, transportation power, stationary power for buildings and other distributed generation applications. The first objective of this contribution is to find a suitable reduced model of a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC). The derived reduced model is then used to design a state estimator. I...

Effect of recycling solid oxide fuel cell products on the performance of a SOFC-Gas turbine hybrid system

In this study, the effect of recycling fuel cell products on the performance of a solid oxide fuel cell and gas turbine (SOFC-GT) hybrid system was investigated. Three types of products recycling are considered: cathode products recycling (CPR), anode products recycling (APR), and both cathode and anode products recycling (BACPR). In the present work,   operating temperature and  limiting curre...

A Study on Performance of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell-Stirling Engine Cycle Combined System- Part I: SOFC Simulation by Programming in Matlab and Modeling in Hysys

In recent years, using new methods in utilization of energy resources has become necessary due to environmental pollution and restriction of energy resources. The hybrid system presented in this article produced power with SOFC and Stirling engine. The purpose is to analyze a 50 kW Solid Oxide Fuel Cell that could produce enough thermal energy for a 10 kW Stirling engine working in the hybrid s...

Modeling the Performance of a Tubular Solid Oxide Fuel Cell

In this paper, we develop two computational models for the electrical performance of the tubular solid oxide fuel cell designed by Siemens Westinghouse Corporation. The first model makes simplifying assumptions for activation and concentration polarizations and obtains an analytical solution. In the second procedure, we allow the polarizations to vary with the current density and solve the equa...

Solid Oxide Fuel cell (SOFC): Modeling and Testing Reliability Using Neural Network

The main objective of this paper is testing the reliability of a two dimensional numerical model of Solid Oxide Fuel cell using COMSOL (FEMLAB 3.1) software against neural network model. In the proposed study, two layers feed forward neural network was examined for the purpose of modeling the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system. The examined neural network model with one hidden layer of five no...
